Dinan: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Dinan showcases its medieval history through prominent buildings, fortified town walls and exhibitions. An emblematic landmark is the Château de Dinan, which is also considered an exceptional testament to princely residences of the late Middle Ages.

Culture

The Château de Dinan was built in the 1380s at the request of Duke Jean IV. Today, it offers a scenographic exhibition on medieval warfare and everyday life in a princely residence.

The Centre d’Interprétation de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine presents the permanent exhibition “Dinan, par delà les murs”. It is open year-round and admission is free.

History

The Remparts de Dinan, classified as a historic monument, encircle the entire town over a length of 3.2 kilometres. A circular route along the fortifications passes the keep, ten towers and four surviving gates, offering views of the surrounding countryside.

One of the old town’s notable buildings is the Tour de l’Horloge. It is 43 metres high and has towered over the medieval old town for 550 years. From there, it offers an exceptional panorama of the architectural monuments. Inside is a clock mechanism made in Nantes in 1498 by the German clockmaker Hamzer. The top can be reached via 73 steps, a wooden staircase and a small ladder.

Paths

The Jerzual is a 507-metre-long route reserved for pedestrians and cyclists, connecting the port of Dinan with the upper town.

Events

The Fête des Remparts de Dinan is a medieval festival held every two years on the third weekend of July in the heart of the historic town.
