Paule: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In the north of the municipality of Paule, the Nantes–Brest Canal passes through the town. The canal’s flight of locks begins in Paule and leads to Glomel and the Grande Tranchée. The tree-lined towpath along the canal is ideal for walking and cycling through Paule and its surroundings.

Nature

Paule has six hiking trails ranging from 7.4 to 20 km in length. There is a picnic and parking area at La Pie.

Culture

The Lansalaün Chapel is a 16th-century chapel and, together with its calvary, is classified as a historic monument. The chapel’s axial stained-glass window, created in 1528, depicts the Tree of Jesse. Outside the chapel stands a small fountain beneath a shelter with a gable roof.

The restored Lansalaün road bridge at the Saint-Eloy mill lies below the lock. It has two spans and abutments made of granite blocks.

The Saint-Eloi Chapel, 4 km from the centre of Paule, contains painted portraits, frescoes and numerous votive offerings on its benches. The chapel houses a sculptural group depicting Saint Eligius shoeing a nobleman’s horse.

Near the Saint-Symphorien Chapel in Paule, a first chapel was built in the 9th century AD near a spring that had been protected by an enclosure since the Iron Age.

History

At the site of the fortress of Paule, a surviving section of a rampart at the edge of a departmental road is freely accessible and visible. Casts of busts from Paule are exhibited at the Musée de Bretagne in Rennes.
