La Roche-Derrien: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

La Roche-Derrien is situated on a rocky hilltop at the boundary between river and sea waters. At this point, the Jaudy was easy to cross. The port of La Roche-Derrien is one of the oldest ports on the north coast.

Historic townscape

The Maison rouge is one of the oldest merchant houses in La Roche-Derrien. In the upper town around Place du Martray are half-timbered bourgeois houses built between the 15th and 17th centuries.

Culture and history

The Église Sainte-Catherine combines Romanesque and Gothic features; its oldest parts date from the 13th century. It is protected as a historic monument. It also bears traces of military use associated with Constable Olivier de Clisson.

Places and views

The Chapelle du Calvaire stands on a platform built over the ruins of the medieval castle tower that was demolished in 1420. From outside the Chapelle du Calvaire, there is a remarkable view of La Roche-Derrien and the Jaudy valley. The chapel is open seasonally; visitors can obtain information at the town hall.

Traces of the past

The former flax retting pits provide an insight into the world of tow fibre, which shaped the identity of La Roche-Derrien. During an earlier digital tour of the Petite Cité de Caractère La Roche-Derrien, tablets were used that combined augmented reality, 3D reconstructions and a druid hunt.
