Gommenec'h: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Gommenec'h showcases impressive examples of architectural history, religious tradition and rural landscapes within a small area. Historic chapels and churches, a former centre of community activities and a signposted circular cycling route offer the area a variety of cultural and scenic points of interest.

Culture and History

The Notre-Dame de Douarnec Chapel and its tree-lined churchyard were listed as a historic monument by decree of 5 April 1950. The chapel was built in the 15th century and completely restored in 1992; it is open to visitors.

The present-day Saint-Guy Church was built in 1722 on the remains of an earlier structure and partially rebuilt after a fire in 1907. Panels from the 18th century are displayed in front of the altar. The church also houses a painting by Raphaël Donguy from Saint-Brieuc and a statue of Saint Joran.

The washhouse in Gommenec'h was formerly a centre of community activities. It is open to everyone.

Landscape

The Leff is one of four rivers that form the boundaries of Gommenec'h. The Boucle Glazik also passes through the landscape: this signposted, 13-kilometre, easy circular cycling route runs through Gommenec'h, Pommerit-le-Vicomte and Saint-Gilles-les-Bois and offers an opportunity to discover the bocage landscape.

Religious Heritage and Traditions

The Notre-Dame de Douannec Chapel is considered to be a major reconstruction of a small seigneurial chapel that belonged to a nearby noble residence, whose ruins are still visible. It preserves numerous ex votos and polychrome statues from other chapels that had been sold during the French Revolution. The Pardon in honour of the chapel is celebrated on the second Sunday in September.

The Saint-Guy Fountain dates from the 18th century. Its spring is enclosed in a square structure with a pyramid-shaped roof. The waters of the Saint-Guy Fountain were believed to protect pilgrims from neurological disorders such as epilepsy. The Saint-Guy Fountain is located near a religious building.
