Merléac: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Merléac is characterised by an expansive landscape of waterways. At the same time, it is home to remarkable examples of Breton architectural and ecclesiastical history.

Water and Trails

In the municipality of Merléac, the Rigole d’Hilvern is a voie verte for walking and cycling. It runs from the Barrage de Bosméléac to Le Quillio. It is also a 65-km-long artificial waterway that begins at the Oust, at the foot of the Barrage de Bosméléac in Merléac. The Bosméléac dam and its artificial reservoir were built in 1832 and 1838 to supply the Canal de Nantes à Brest with water via the Rigole d’Hilvern.

Nature and Activities

The Lac de Bosméléac stretches across the territories of Allineuc, Le Bodéo, Merléac and St Martin des Près. Paths created by the Côtes d’Armor département allow visitors to follow a 5-km circular route around part of the reservoir. Fishing, walks, horse rides and mountain biking are also possible at the lake.

The western part of the lake, known as the Queue du Lac, forms its own natural area. It serves as a wintering and nesting ground for waterbirds, including great crested grebes and coots.

Culture and History

The parish church of Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul in Merléac was built mainly during the second half of the 17th century. The year 1673 is inscribed on a bricked-up door in the south wall of the nave; side chapels and a baptistery were added in the 18th century. The floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, while the nave has a single aisle.

The Chapelle Saint-Jacques stands in the hamlet of Saint-Léon in Merléac. It dates from the 14th century and was probably built from the last third of that century onwards. In the following century, it received exceptional wall paintings, a painted wooden vault and magnificent main glazing. The chapel can be visited free of charge during the day.

The panels of the Balade Numérique de Bosméléac also lead visitors into the local past: using a QR code, they can discover old photographs, unique testimonies and a story in Gallo.
