Le Quiou combines impressive examples of Breton architectural heritage with ancient archaeology and an unusual natural landscape. The story stretches from the 15th-century Château de Hac to the Villa Gallo-Romaine du Quiou and the limestone subsoil of the Espace naturel sensible de la Hazardière.

Culture and architectural heritage

The Château de Hac was built between 1440 and 1448 for Jean Hingant, chamberlain to the Duke of Brittany. It is constructed almost entirely from Falun limestone.

The parish church of Notre-Dame in Le Quiou was built between 1864 and 1866 in the Neo-Gothic style; its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross. Its furnishings include a reused 15th-century credence table from the former church.

Sacred details

The Chapelle du Haut-Tréveleuc has a credence table set into the wall, decorated with painted geometric Renaissance motifs. Its portal features an archivolt decorated by the Quillen family and a coat of arms bearing the arms of the Plumaugat family, the lords who were at the origin of the village in 1583. The chapel is open to visitors during the Journées du patrimoine or by prior arrangement with the owners.

Ancient traces

The Villa Gallo-Romaine du Quiou is one of the significant ancient archaeological sites in the Côtes-d’Armor département. It was inhabited from the 1st to the 4th century. Guided tours with commentary make the archaeology accessible to visitors.

Nature and trails

The Espace naturel sensible de la Hazardière is open to the public. Its limestone subsoil is unique in Brittany; 15 million years ago, the Falun sea covered the area.

The V3 section (Saint-Malo–Rhuys) includes a former railway line that served Le Quiou and has been converted into a Voie Verte. A walking loop connects the Espace naturel sensible de la Hazardière with the local Voie Verte.

Other places:Binic, Trévou-Tréguignec, Saint-Méloir-Des-Bois, Tréguidel, Langrolay-Sur-Rance, Lancieux, Sévignac and Le Hinglé.
