The circular route begins in Vernet-la-Varenne and passes through hilly countryside west of the Monts du Livradois, with numerous viewpoints.

Le moulin de la Rode is an easy 11.5 km circular hike with a stated duration of around 3 hours and 30 minutes. The route leads to the remains of the Moulin de la Rode.

At La Geneste Haute, there is a permanent orienteering course focusing on rural and sporting heritage, with 60 permanently marked control points.

Water and Activities

The 3-hectare artificial Plan d'eau du Vernet is located in the Parc naturel régional du Livradois-Forez. It is the only lake in the Pays d'Issoire where supervised swimming is offered daily from 1 July to 31 August, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Pedal boats and stand-up paddleboards are available for hire at the Plan d'eau du Vernet in July and August. At the start of Espace VTT no. 1, there are numerous signposted routes, as well as mountain bike, electric mountain bike, electric scooter and helmet hire.

Culture

The Château de Montfort is a castle complex built in the 12th century and remodelled in the 17th century, overlooking the town centre and the Vernet lake. The Maison de l’Améthyste is located on the ground floor; temporary exhibitions are held on the upper floor during the summer season.

The Maison de l’Améthyste offers activities and tours showcasing the amethyst typical of the region. The geosite museum of the Maison de l’Améthyste can be visited free of charge and independently; all other activities require the reservation of a time slot.

The regular producers’ market on Monday mornings at Place Saint-Roch in Vernet-la-Varenne focuses on gastronomy and regional produce.
