Culture and History

The tanning trade was practiced in Maringues from the 13th century onward, shaping the town for several centuries and determining its development.

The Anciennes tanneries preserve the workshops of tanners and candle makers; an ecomuseum showcases leather processing in running water. The Maison en pans de bois on Rue de Bouillon dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and has projecting upper storeys with finely carved stone corbels and trefoil arches. The Maison en pans de bois is partially protected as a historic monument; its façades and roofs are listed.

The Église Saint-Étienne has an apse, an ambulatory, a transept, a three-aisled nave and a Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre. The Hôtel des Ducs de Bouillon, built in the 15th century, houses the Médiathèque of Maringues.

The Hôtel Grimardias was built from 1782 onward by the architect Deval for the Grimardias family. It has a Neoclassical street façade and interiors dating predominantly from the 18th century, including stucco fireplaces and painted mythological panels.
