Saint-Saturnin: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Romanesque church of Saint-Saturnin was built between 1150 and 1157 and is the smallest of the five major Romanesque churches in Auvergne. It was built from volcanic rock and light arkose sandstone. The Église Notre-Dame, also known as the Église de Saint-Saturnin, has been classified as a historic monument since the 1862 list.

Culture

The 12th-century Romanesque Chapelle Sainte-Magdeleine is located in Saint-Saturnin and has been converted into a rural residential building. Its apse was raised in the 15th century to form a defensive tower that was integrated into the fortified enclosure of Saint-Saturnin. The basalt huts of the Montagne de la Serre are built into walls in such a way that only their doors are visible.

The Château Royal de Saint-Saturnin is a castle built in the 13th century. In the 15th century, it was embellished under the influence of the Renaissance; later, it belonged to Catherine de Médicis, Marguerite de Valois and King Louis XIII.

In the area around Saint-Saturnin lies the Château de Sarlièves, a castle. The Château de Marchidial can be found there as a ruin. The Musée Bargoin, a museum, and the Artothèque de Clermont-Ferrand, a closed museum, are also located in the surrounding area.

Local Life

The Marché de producteurs in Saint-Saturnin takes place year-round on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Place du 8 mai. Local products such as jams, honey, cheese, vegetables and bread are offered. The Foire de Saint-Saturnin takes place on 1 May and includes culinary and musical events.

Guided tours of the castle last approximately 50 minutes and lead from the keep to the gardens. The recommended tour through Saint-Saturnin begins at the Place du 8 Mai, leads over the heights of the village to the Monne and back to the church, and takes about one hour on foot.
