Saint-Rémy-De-Chargnat: Apartments and Holiday Homes

Nature
Le pic d'Usson is an easy hike of around three hours over 11 km, with 310 metres of ascent. It is also an officially designated circular hiking route in Saint-Rémy-de-Chargnat, offered and maintained by the Puy-de-Dôme département as part of the PDIPR.
Several local hiking trails pass through the forests and former vineyards of Saint-Rémy-de-Chargnat and by mills and their Béalières. The 65 km GR® de Pays Val d’Allier loop also passes through the village.
Cuisine
L’Atelier Auvergnat produces chocolate and biscuits at its site in Saint-Rémy-de-Chargnat. In the factory shop, visitors can watch the most important steps in biscuit production through glass windows. During a visit, they also receive explanations about the history and working methods of the business and can sample some specialities on site.
History
The Chapelle Saint-Rémy was formerly an important religious centre and an outlying establishment of the Cluniac priory of Sauxillanges. The former chapel stood on the left bank near the cemetery and was abandoned at the end of the 18th century, when the church became the parish church.
The nave of the Saint-Rémy parish church dates from the 13th century. The church’s southern seigneurial chapel dates from the 15th century and preserves traces of wall paintings as well as coats of arms. Remains of Saint-Rémy-de-Chargnat’s medieval fortifications also survive in the village, including traces of walls and a tower.
The local Béalières were built from the 17th century onwards to support the operation of the mills. Château de la Vernède began as a fortified building and later served as a hunting lodge for Marguerite de Valois. Château de Pasredon has been documented as the seat of a fief since the 14th century and was long owned by the Matharel family. Château des Aiguilles began as a 14th-century fortress, retains its feudal appearance, and was restored together with its towers.
Cycling
The Circuit cyclo/vélo route n° 2 runs through the Saint-Rémy-de-Chargnat area and highlights the former property of the Cluniac priory of Sauxillanges.
