Montaigut: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

A viewpoint on the grounds of the Château de Montaigut offers views across Auvergne, Bourbonnais and Marche in clear weather. Those choosing Montaigut as a destination may wish to find a holiday apartment.

Culture and History

The bell tower of Montaigut has been classified as a historic monument since 2010. Inside is the 800 kg bell Charlotte, cast in 1567 and paid for by the consuls.

Historical traces can also be found elsewhere. The Maison de l’Apothicaire is a 13th-century residential building; its carved corner stone depicts an allegory of apothecaries. Of the Porte Montmarault, which formerly consisted of two towers, one tower remains; it was integrated into the town fortifications.

To reach the Château de Montaigut, attackers had to pass through a barbican and two defensive structures.

Nature and Trails

The municipality offers three signposted hiking trails and a mountain-bike route that explore Montaigut and its surroundings. The “Circuit du Grand Cerf” circular trail starts at the Place de la Mairie. The “Montaigut médiéval” circular trail also starts there; parking spaces are located next to the square.

The “Montaigut médiéval” circular trail leads through the medieval village to the castle ruins and then through the bocage landscape around the Étang de Montmazot. The Montaigut leisure area also offers opportunities for fishing.
