Culture and History

In the historic centre of Vic-le-Comte, a heritage trail presents the town’s architectural heritage and history, taking visitors back to the time of the Counts of Auvergne and the Renaissance. The municipality provides two plans for the heritage trails; 21 selected sights in the municipality are marked with explanatory information panels.

A particular focus is the former Sainte-Chapelle. It dates from the 16th century and was founded by Jean Stuart and Anne de la Tour. Today, it is incorporated into the Église Saint-Pierre. The former Sainte-Chapelle houses the Retable des Vertus, which was classified as an immovable cultural property in 1840. The Sainte-Chapelle is known for its historic stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments. One pane of a Sainte-Chapelle window was deliberately pierced in the centre so that white light could pass directly through it.

Le Chai is a former 18th-century building where the entire winemaking process once took place; it has exposed vaults and is located in the historic town centre. The heritage visit includes a tasting of regional products at Le Chai.

Nature and Trails

The Enval archaeological site is located on a plateau in the Vic-le-Comte area and offers distant views of the Puy de Sancy. An exceptional Magdalenian site was discovered in Enval in 1929. The “Enval, une falaise habitée” experience follows in the footsteps of the Magdalenian period and leads to a cliff face shaped by humans since prehistoric times.

The Le bassin de Vic-le-Comte circular trail is 10 kilometres long, takes around three hours, is of moderate difficulty and is marked in yellow.

Water and Landscapes

The Plan d'eau des Orleaux is used for fishing as well as walking, cycling and horse riding. At Longues beach, the Club Nautique offers an introduction to paddleboarding and kayaking.

The following routes are designated for canoe trips: Chadieu–Longues, 5 kilometres; Coudes–Longues, 9 kilometres; and Orbeil–Longues, 18 kilometres.
