Nature

Accous features both wooded and open habitats; mosaic-like and agriculturally shaped landscapes are concentrated in the west of the commune and around the village. In Accous, herds graze on numerous summer pastures; their milk is processed into cheese, and the commune lies within the production and manufacturing area of the Ossau-Iraty appellation.

Culture and History

The Église Saint-Martin in Accous has a choir attributed to the 14th century and was rebuilt in the 18th century; its main door bears the year 1724. The Chapelle Saint-Saturnin-de-Jouers is protected by an entry under an order dated 12 December 1986.

The Chapelle Saint-Christau was a place of pilgrimage; three springs known for their healing properties and a bathing pool were located nearby. Mass is still held every year on 25 July at the Chapelle Saint-Christau.

Hiking

The GR 653, a section of the Way of St. James, runs through Accous from north to south, passing at the foot of the Poey and continuing through the village to Berthe and the Pont de Pierre. The Tour et sommet du Poey circular route runs from the upper village or from the Croix d'Espiate around the Poey and up to its summit.

Route No. 69 to Lac d'Arlet via Lhers starts in Accous and is a difficult 17 km circular hike with a stated duration of 7 hours and 30 minutes. Part of this route lies within the core zone of the Parc national des Pyrénées; painted trail markings are prohibited there and direction signs are provided instead. It leads to a lake overlooked by the Pic d'Aillary and the Pic d'Arlet; herds graze around the lake.
