Sauvelade: Holiday Apartments and Houses

The church of Sauvelade is the former abbey chapel, built by monks, and the only surviving remnant of the abbey destroyed during the Wars of Religion. Its floor plan in the shape of a Greek cross is described as unique in Béarn.

Culture and History

Inside the church of Sauvelade is a painted and gilded wooden statue of Saint James the Elder. Since 1984, the statue has been classified as a historic monument with protected-object status.

The Pont romain de Sauvelade spans the Laà. It is located on the Way of St. James and enables pilgrims to cross the river. The bridge was built in the 12th or 13th century, probably at the same time as the abbey.

Pilgrimage Route

Sauvelade is a stage on the Via Podiensis, the Voie du Puy-en-Velay, a route of the Way of St. James between Arthez-de-Béarn and Navarrenx. Sauvelade’s stage accommodation welcomes pilgrims and hikers travelling along the GR65.
