Lahonce combines a traditional abbey history with waterscapes, wetlands and numerous destinations in the surrounding area. Particularly distinctive is the Premonstratensian Abbey of Notre Dame de l’Assomption de la Bienheureuse Vierge Marie: it was built in 1164 on a plot of land above the Adour.
Culture and festivals
The church of the Abbey of Notre Dame de l’Assomption de la Bienheureuse Vierge Marie has been listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments since 1925. It can be visited all year round; during opening hours, the key is issued at the town hall upon presentation of an identity document.
The events calendar also features its own traditions. In May, Ttirrittak Elkartea organises Ttirrittak Eguna, a recurring festival. The Fêtes de Lahonce take place every year on the first weekend of July.
Water and activities
Club Adour Plaisance is active on the Adour. It offers beginners and experienced sailors outings on the river. In summer, sailing courses for all age groups from seven years old are also part of the programme. The courses cover safety, manoeuvres, adjustments and independent sailing and are led by qualified instructors.
Nature
The Barthes de Lahonce form a mosaic of meadows, hedges, fields and bodies of water and serve as an ecological corridor. Another landscape unit lies at Lac d’Arbéou: the route there has benches, picnic tables, information boards and an environmental quiz. The ponds, Barthes and streams around Lac d’Arbéou form a preserved wetland.
