In La Bastide-Clairence, the checkerboard layout of a new town founded in the 14th century has been preserved. The town’s remarkable heritage area was classified as a “remarkable heritage site” by ministerial decree on 29 June 2022.

Culture and townscape
Place des Arceaux is the central square of La Bastide-Clairence. Arcades line it, serving as passageways and places of commerce. The Church of Notre Dame de l’Assomption was built in the 14th century and consecrated in 1312 by the Bishop of Bayonne and Pamplona.
The church’s side cloisters are paved with tombstones and form the town’s first cemetery. Inside, Notre Dame de l’Assomption is an example of a Basque church with a wooden gallery.
The Jewish cemetery is also part of the historic townscape. Sixty-two graves have been recorded there; the oldest is believed to date from around 1610. La Bastide-Clairence’s former washhouse is now a tourist attraction.
Traditions and discoveries
At the trinquet in La Bastide-Clairence, Basque pelota—particularly bare-handed pelota and Pala Ancha—as well as Jeu de Paume are played. The trinquet is considered the oldest Jeu de Paume court still in operation; an examination of the wood in its roof structure dates it to 1513.
The Tèrra-Aventura route passes through the streets and hidden paths of La Bastide-Clairence. QR codes and puzzles make it possible to discover the town’s historical and cultural heritage in a playful way.
Another stop is the educational farm “On va bien s’ Marais!”. It offers encounters with animals and interactive panels about biodiversity along its educational trail.
Landscape and trails
The educational farm “On va bien s’ Marais!” overlooks a protected six-hectare wetland surrounded by hilly woodland.
The Asinerie de Pierretoun is located seven kilometres from the centre of La Bastide-Clairence. Upon reservation, it offers family-friendly walks and hikes with a pack donkey, as well as an educational workshop before setting out.
A cycle loop also leads to La Bastide-Clairence: the “La vallée de l’Adour” route reaches the town via the D610.
