A Natura 2000 site has been designated within the municipality of Rontignon. The saligue in Rontignon features vegetation typical of the marshy areas of the Gave de Pau.
Paths and Activities
The V81 greenway, which connects Port-Vendres with Hendaye, passes through Rontignon and makes it possible to reach Pau by bicycle in a short time. The greenway in Rontignon is intended for non-motorised travel, especially for pedestrians, cyclists, roller skaters and people with reduced mobility.
The Rontignon – Sentier des Crêtes route starts at the car park by the stadium at 1 Rue des Écoles and is signposted with yellow footpath marker no. 8. The Rontignon – Sentier des Crêtes hiking trail offers views of the surrounding ridges. Rontignon also has a mountain bike practice track.
Culture and History
The name Rontignon derives from the Latin personal name Frontinius, to which the suffix -onem (“Domaine de”) was added.
In the centre of Rontignon, a former washhouse stands in La Cassourade. It was supplied by a small canal that has since disappeared; communal washing came to an end in the 1960s with the advent of washing machines and running water.
The stained-glass windows of Saint-Pierre Church are signed by the glass artist Mauméjean and date from 1867.
