Musculdy: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Culture and History

The Chapelle Saint-Antoine was built in 1385 at an altitude of 702 metres on the road to the Col d’Osquich in Musculdy. From the chapel, there is a view over the provinces of Soule and Basse-Navarre. In the Église Saint-Cyprien, the two side altars are made of carved, gilded and painted wood with a marble-effect finish; they date from the 18th century. The pilgrimage to the Chapelle Saint-Antoine takes place on the second Sunday in July and on the Sunday after 15 August.

Nature and Hiking

The San Antoni route meets the GR78 pilgrimage trail at a broad mountain pass and leads through a forest of pedunculate oaks. The hiking route from Musculdy to the Chapelle Saint-Antoine is 14 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 700 metres and is intended for experienced hikers. The San Antoni route includes muddy and slippery sections; hiking boots are required.

Cuisine and Agriculture

The Azkorria artisan cheese dairy is a cooperative of 16 farmers from Soule. It produces AOP Ossau-Iraty cheese from the milk of naturally fed sheep of local breeds, without fermented feed. By appointment, Azkorria offers tours of the cheese cooperative with explanations of the production steps, as well as tastings and sales.

The Ferme Arrokain in Musculdy works with local, hardy breeds, including the Basque Kintoa AOP pig, the red-headed Manex sheep, the Basque-Béarnaise sheep marketed under the Ossau-Iraty designation and Blonde d’Aquitaine cattle. Every Friday in July and August from 10 a.m. to noon, the Ferme Arrokain offers a farm visit with tasting; on other days, visits are possible by reservation.

Those who choose Musculdy for a stay may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
