Abitain lies on the left bank of the Gave d’Oloron. A Voie Verte runs through the village and is available to walkers and cyclists.
Nature and Trails
Abitain is part of the Gave d’Oloron et marais de Labastide-Villefranche Natura 2000 site, which is designated as a Special Area of Conservation. The municipality is also one of those listed in the La Bidouze Natura 2000 site. In this area, Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is listed as a species under Annex II.
Salmon fishing is also part of the village’s profile: Abitain is an important salmon-fishing location and has well-known salmon pools. These famous salmon pools inspired Michel Duborgel, a fisherman, writer and painter.
The Scandibérique route between Urt and Saint-Palais follows the track of a former railway line as far as the former Abitain station. On the Voie Verte, the section starts again at the former Abitain station at kilometre 3.5.
Culture and Local History
The Église Saint-Pierre in Abitain is a restored single-nave church with a bell tower above the entrance porch. It was formerly a lay abbey, was extensively restored around 1894–1895, and restored again in 1926; it was also rebuilt in 1926.
