The GR10 begins on the outskirts of Biriatou. Those who choose Biriatou as the destination for their stay may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Hiking
The hiking route from Hendaye to Olhette reaches Biriatou and then continues via the Rocher des Perdrix viewpoint and the summit of Xoldoko Gaina to the Col des Poiriers. The Xoldo route passes the Rocher des Perdrix viewpoint and an information board before continuing to the summit.
The hike up Xoldo takes around 3 hours, is 8.4 km long, has an elevation gain of 550 m and is of moderate difficulty. The ascent of Xoldo offers views from the Bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz to Biarritz and, in clear weather, beyond to the beaches of the Landes.
Nature
In an ecologically preserved environment, numerous paths along the river and through the surrounding forests make it easier to explore nature. The Sentier des douaniers follows the border along the Bidasoa River towards Col d’Ibardin and the La Rhune massif.
Culture
The Église Saint-Martin de Biriatou has been documented since 1305. It is a rectangular building surrounded by its cemetery. The church has a western bell-tower porch and a former town hall in a second porch on the northern side.
The Louis XIV Redoubt was used during the Franco-Spanish War from 1793 to 1795. It commemorates the defence of the French-Spanish border by Marshal Soult against the British army in 1813. The redoubt is located on a ridge belonging to Urrugne and Biriatou; part of it lies within the municipality of Urrugne.
The Biriatou fronton hosts competitions in bare-handed pelota, particularly in summer. The wall fronton of the “Xoldo” building is open year-round to participants in bare-handed pelota.
