Holiday apartment in Rudersdal Municipality: Nature, Culture and Øresund

Rudersdal Municipality combines landscapes shaped by the Ice Age, historic sites, cultural routes and the coast along Øresund. Ridges, undulating dead-ice landscapes and meltwater valleys were formed between 20,000 and 16,000 years ago. Along the Øresund coast, steep coastal slopes dominate the landscape; they were formed as the sea and land rose while the ice melted.

A marked blue MTB route in Rude Skov is 10 kilometres long and leads through technically challenging terrain with many metres of elevation gain. Those who prefer travelling on foot will find a hiking route marked with yellow dots, which can be shortened or extended via other roads and paths.

Forest Paths, Views and Nature Experiences

The Rude Skov Rundt route has tent and fire sites. There is also a route with limited accessibility around Ebberøddam and Blegmandsmosen. Rude Skov can be reached by bus 354 from Holte Station and bus 197 from Birkerød Station.

Landsebakken lies 68 metres above sea level. The short terminal moraine hill rises steeply 15 to 20 metres above its surroundings. Vaserne has a different character: This protected 135-hectare lake, heathland and swamp-forest area is home to more than 180 different bird species.

Vaserne has a bird tower with a long ramp leading to the lower level for wheelchair users and people with walking difficulties. A birdwatching bridge approximately 12 metres long along Chr. Winthers Sti offers views of the birdlife on the lake and at the edge of the reeds. A 503-metre-long wooden bridge with tables and benches has been designed to provide easy wheelchair access. It was built in cooperation with the Sjælsø kano- og kajak forening.

Routes Between Nature, History and Art

The approximately 32-kilometre-long KulturSlangen runs from Næsseslottet at Furesøen to Vedbæk Havn and Øresund. It combines nature, art and history and runs as a continuous route through residential neighbourhoods and urban areas. You can start at any point. KulturSlangen also includes six shorter routes ranging from 3 to 9 kilometres.

FamilieRuten is a signposted route measuring 21.5 kilometres in total, which can be used on foot or by bicycle. Grisestien between Nærum and Vedbæk follows a former railway line. The tracks were removed in 1923; today, the route is a nature trail. The 4.5-kilometre Vedbækturen branches off from KulturSlangen and leads past old country houses along Vedbæk Strandvej, through the area around Enrum Dam and past Vedbæk Church.

Næsseslotsturen is a 3.1-kilometre circular route, or 4.15 kilometres including Luknam. It conveys the history of friendship and the 18th-century enthusiasm for the romantic English landscape garden. The main building of Næsseslottet was constructed in the Louis XVI style between 1782 and 1784. Gl. Holtegaardturen is approximately 4.8 kilometres long.

Historic Sites and Regional Culture

Mothsgården is Denmark’s oldest preserved country estate. The permanent exhibition covers the history of the Rudersdal region over a period of 1,000 years. Mothsgården is also a good starting point for walks in Kirkeskoven or by Søllerød Sø. More graves from the hunter-gatherer Stone Age have been found in Vedbæk than anywhere else in Denmark. During the construction of Vedbæk Skole in 1975, 17 graves containing the remains of 22 people in total were discovered. The Vedbæk finds are among Europe’s most exceptional discoveries from the hunter-gatherer Stone Age; their story is presented at the site where they were discovered.

Gl. Holtegaard serves as an art gallery with changing exhibitions of modern and older art. The estate includes a sculpture park in the historic Baroque garden as well as classical concerts, lectures and events. Café Alma serves coffee, lunch and wine, focusing on organic and seasonal ingredients as well as local producers. The medieval Søllerød Church also tells the story of the region’s past: It was built before 1180 from limestone blocks from Stevns, which were brought in via Vedbæk. A tour of Søllerød Cemetery conveys the history of Søllerød Parish.

Øresund, Bathing Piers and Beach Days

At Skodsborg Strandpark, there is a bathing pier facility with limited accessibility that can be used year-round. At Vedbæk Havn, there are opportunities for sailing and swimming in Øresund. Vedbæk Nordstrand has exercise equipment, a playground and bathing piers. Vedbæk Sydstrand offers beach volleyball courts, a fitness area, as well as a sandbox with a wooden ship and play equipment.
