Holiday apartment in Tårnby Municipality: Nature, Art and the Øresund

Tårnby Municipality combines open landscapes, coastline, green paths, maritime places and modern art. Alongside nature observation and swimming in the Øresund, both long routes and compact cultural and discovery activities are available. The municipality therefore does not appear as a uniform backdrop, but rather in several different facets.

Nature

Amager Nature Park covers 3,500 hectares and consists of Amager Fælled, Kalvebod Fælled, Kongelunden and Dragør Sydstrand. Kalvebod Fælled in particular has a protected character: the area is protected as part of the EU Natura 2000 network and designated as a nature reserve. This primarily includes the coastal meadows with their unique flora and birdlife. Along the hiking route that runs through the area, visitors can observe birds of prey hunting, larks, lapwings, swans, ducks and other migratory birds.

Several routes open up different landscapes. The Hestefælledruten connects forest, meadow and beach; the new dike offers a view. The Amarminoen runs across open coastal meadows, to the gnarled oaks on the coast in Kongelunden, through a bird sanctuary and through Pinseskoven, Denmark’s largest naturally seeded birch forest. As a separate 24-kilometre route, the Amarminoen begins at DR Byen, runs through Kalvebod Fælled and ends in the south in Dragør. On the Pinseskovsruten, visitors experience an open birch forest and may, with a little luck, observe fallow deer.

The TårnbyTuren is approximately 15 kilometres long and runs from Kastrup Lystbådehavn through several green areas of the city to Amager Nature Park. It is accessible to prams and wheelchairs, but in some places runs along uneven grass and forest paths.

Water

At Kastrup Strandpark, there is direct access to the Øresund for swimming from the beach, bathing jetty and diving boards. Fishing, sailing and diving are also possible there. Kastrup Søbad can be used year-round and free of charge and has accessibility-friendly changing rooms and toilets.

The Kastrup Lystbådehavn also has a maritime character. It comprises a historic harbour from 1954 and a modern harbour from 1985 with space for around 900 boats, clubhouses and maritime activities.

Culture

Kastrupgårdsamlingen is a state-recognised art museum for modern graphic art and presents several special exhibitions each year. The graphic collection comprises more than 7,000 graphic works, created predominantly by artists based in Denmark and the rest of the Nordic region. As part of an educational programme on modern graphic art, participants can print their own graphic works.

Under the title “Gå og oplev kunst”, visitors can discover statues and sculptures in Tårnby as well as find the artist Jeppe Hein’s blue benches. Art can therefore be encountered both in the museum and in public spaces.

Green spaces

Byparken offers, among other things, a nature playground, fitness equipment, facilities for skating, pétanque, basketball and cycling, a perennial garden, a maze of beech hedges, as well as paths and activity routes. In Ugandaskoven, there is an elevated viewing platform overlooking the trees of the forest and a small pond.

Skolebotanisk Have offers opportunities for nature experiences and activities, including searching for small animals on land and in the water. Other residents may walk there or sit on benches or on the grass, provided the area is not currently being used by schools or day-care centres.

Transport connections

In Kastrup lies National Aquarium Denmark, Den Blå Planet, 600 metres from Kastrup station on metro line M2. The aquarium offers behind-the-scenes tours. Visitors see areas for animal caretakers, maintenance corridors, tanks for fish before they are added to the exhibition, as well as the large pumping and filtration system.

Copenhagen Airport metro station is directly connected to Terminal 3. During the day and evening, the metro runs every 4 to 6 minutes; the journey from Nørreport to the airport takes 15 minutes.
