Gentofte combines a large natural area with parks, historic sites and contemporary art. Gentofte Sø is Gentofte’s largest natural area and is used for exercise, play, relaxation and nature experiences. Nature and paths

The walking trail around Gentofte Sø is approximately 4 kilometres long. Wild orchids grow in Brobækmose, which is also home to a diverse birdlife and changing landscapes of forest, swamp and bog. A treetop hideout in Brobæk Mose at Gentofte Sø offers views of otherwise hidden lakes.

Gentofte can also be explored by bicycle via designated routes: four cycle routes and a Heart Route run through Gentofte and near major and minor attractions. The Park Route cycle route passes by or through numerous green spaces and parks in Gentofte Municipality.

Hundesømosen offers varied opportunities for relaxation, play and nature experiences. Its western section is designated as a natural forest. Thus, Gentofte Sø and the other green spaces offer a variety of landscapes side by side, without nature being limited to a single appearance.

Parks and coast

Charlottenlund Palace Park was laid out in the Romantic style. Charlottenlund Forest contains large and small lawns connected by numerous small paths. Another historic garden is Bernstorff Palace Garden, which was laid out in the French Rococo style in the late 1760s. It features large grass areas surrounded by Danish woodland.

Charlottenlund Fort was built as part of Copenhagen’s coastal fortifications. Charlottenlund Beach Park is also located by the water; it has been a public park since 1932 and is used for sunbathing and summer stays. The park has public toilets and a kiosk; from the bathing jetty, the water is accessible by wheelchair.

History and museums

Øregaard Museum presents changing special exhibitions of Danish and international art. The collection also includes 200 years of Danish art from 1750 to 1950. The building itself was originally constructed from 1806 to 1808 as a country residence for the merchant and shipowner Johannes Søbøtker (1777–1854) and his family.

Garderhøjfortet is a historic fort that has been renovated and is now open to everyone as an educational centre. The interactive exhibitions allow visitors to train like soldiers in the First World War, send Morse messages and operate a working twin turret.

Bernstorff Palace dates from 1765 and is one of Denmark’s earliest Neoclassical buildings. Bernstorff Palace is open to the public, as is Bernstorff Palace Garden.

In the vicinity of Gentofte, Bellevue Teatret stands in Klampenborg, a theatre designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1936. In the vicinity of Gentofte, Bellevue Teatret also offers guided tours explaining the theatre’s history.

The collection of the Gentofte Fire Museum traces the development of the fire service from the mid-19th century to the present day. It includes Northern Europe’s oldest motorised fire engine built in Denmark, dating from 1919.

Tranen is Gentofte Municipality’s exhibition venue for contemporary art and is located in Gentofte Main Library. It presents new, young and experimental artists from the Danish and international contemporary art scene.

Tranen’s exhibitions include installations, virtual realities and images in innovative formats. This ongoing exhibition programme is complemented by Kultur & festdage, Gentofte Municipality’s annual four-day cultural festival, which takes place in June.
