Hørsholm Municipality combines the outlines of the former Baroque garden of Hirschholm Castle with lime trees more than 250 years old in Hørsholm Castle Gardens. At the same time, the gardens were the setting for the relationship between Queen Caroline Mathilde and Struensee at Hirschholm Castle. History and landscape are found here directly within the same scenery.

History and Culture

In Folehave, there are 59 burial mounds from the Bronze Age. In addition, two long barrows from the Stone Age have been preserved there; one of these structures is 32 metres long and 9 metres wide. The Hørsholm Local History Museum is located in an 18th-century building that originally served as the tenant farmer's house of the royal Hirschholm Crown Estate. At the museum, the topics range from Hirschholm Castle and freedom of the press to a royal affair; modern exhibitions and creative activities for children complement these themes.

The Neoclassical Hørsholm Church was designed by C.F. Hansen and inaugurated on 21 September 1823. Its design has clear similarities to C.F. Hansen's Church of Our Lady in Copenhagen. The church is normally open during the summer half of the year and in calendar week 42. Usserød Cloth Factory also reflects the region's industrial history: it was founded in 1791 and began producing uniform cloth in 1809. The well-preserved buildings are considered an example of the reuse of a decommissioned industrial complex.

In the centre of Hørsholm stands the Trommen Cultural Centre, with changing exhibitions, a cinema, a library, a theatre and a concert hall. Its distinctive design and selected materials have made the building an attraction in Hørsholm since its inauguration in 1988.

Nature

The Arboretum in Hørsholm comprises approximately 2,000 species and is Denmark's largest collection of trees and shrubs. It can be visited daily from 7:30 a.m. until sunset. Twice a year, at the beginning of May and in September, open days are held. During these events, researchers, staff or students talk about their research and the trees in the collection.

Kongens Dam is a restored large pond with an island that benefits forest visitors as well as animals and plants. The Rungstedlund Bird Sanctuary comprises wetlands, grazing areas, old wild woodland and rich biodiversity. Guided tours of the sanctuary pass Karen Blixen's grave, the Bronze Age burial mound Ewalds Høj and Herregårdslunden. A guided tour by the Karen Blixen Museum Rungstedlund leads through the 15-hectare bird sanctuary that Karen Blixen established in 1958.

Trails

Rungsted Kyst railway station is approximately 500 metres from the northern entrance to Rungsted Hegn. The Blixen Route is a 16-kilometre circular hiking trail that begins and ends at the Karen Blixen Museum. In the Folehave and Hørsholm Castle Gardens areas, there are also three signposted hiking or running routes measuring 9.5 kilometres, 5.2 kilometres and 2.4 kilometres. The Heart Trail in Hørsholm Castle Gardens is an approximately 2-kilometre exercise walk.

The Clover Trails consist of four signposted hiking, running and cycling routes that begin at the Clover Pole in PH Park. On the red route, QR codes along the trail allow visitors to listen to the horror story “Allikernes Arv”. In Sjælsølund Forest, free camping is permitted throughout the entire forest.

Leisure and Coast

Hørsholm Sports Park comprises two ice rinks, a swimming pool, a sports hall, a squash hall, a badminton hall and two tennis halls. Hørsholm Golf's six-hole pitch-and-putt course is open to everyone and can be played without membership through the pay-and-play system for a green fee.

Rungsted Harbour is located on the Øresund coast and has 850 berths. The municipality therefore encompasses everything from historic gardens and Bronze Age monuments to forests, nature reserves and signposted trails, as well as sports, culture and harbour scenery.
