Charlottenlund: Beach Park, Forest and Culture

Charlottenlund offers a varied mix of beach park, old woodland landscapes, culture and special excursion destinations. Beach park and forest for different day plans

Charlottenlund Beach Park has been a public park since 1932. It covers approximately 13 hectares and stretches for around 650 metres. The park includes a fine sandy beach as well as areas consisting mainly of lawns and large trees. The bathing water quality was rated “excellent” in 2024; this rating is based on data from 2021 to 2024. For a stay at the beach park, public transport is available on Strandvejen, as are marked parking spaces along the road. Further parking spaces are located at the southern and northern ends of the park.

Charlottenlund Forest can also be explored according to different interests. The official hiking route through the forest and palace gardens is approximately 5 kilometres long. In addition, Charlottenlund Forest has 30 orienteering posts and 11 maps with routes of varying difficulty and length. The paths are suitable for people with reduced mobility, including wheelchair users. The forest consists mainly of old oak woodland, with around 300 old oak trees. This allows you to plan your exploration according to the available routes and their varying lengths and difficulty levels, without being limited to a single type of excursion.

Palace, garden and unusual museum experiences

Charlottenlund Palace was originally built as a Baroque palace and later converted into the French Renaissance palace that can be seen today. The Forest Botanical Garden offers another historical facet: it was established in 1799 as a small arboretum to support forestry education at the University of Copenhagen.

In the Art Park of the Ordrupgaard Museum, visitors can touch, climb, crawl through, play in and dance among contemporary works of art. The Art Park is free and open to everyone. The museum also includes Finn Juhl’s House. There, visitors can experience Danish design history and an outstanding modernist art collection in a domestic setting. These attractions give your trip a cultural focus that is clearly different from a classic day at the beach or in the forest.

Fort, water activities and trotting track

Charlottenlund Fort was built between 1883 and 1887 as part of the defence system for Greater Copenhagen and decommissioned in 1932. At KAYAKOMAT at Charlottenlund Fort, you can hire kayaks and SUP boards through an unmanned self-service operation. Booking takes place online; you receive a code by email and SMS for collection.

The Charlottenlund Trotting Track, also known as Lunden, is another option for a sporty or eventful travel programme. It is considered the oldest trotting track in the Nordic region. The Dansk Trav Derby takes place at Charlottenlund Trotting Track on the last weekend of August. There are also regular race days featuring trotting and Monté races.
