Holiday apartment in Brøndby Municipality: Coast, culture and nature

Brøndby Municipality extends from the historic Vestvolden and the churches in Brøndbyøster and Brøndbyvester to the coast, forests, museums and events. The landscape stretches from the beach park in Brøndby Strand to the paths through Brøndbyskoven; in between are places where history, nature and community activities can be experienced.

Coast and landscape

The Vestvolden, which runs through Brøndby, is part of a 14.2-kilometre-long protected fortification. It is of historical value and is also important for biodiversity and the environment. The beach park in Brøndby Strand offers a completely different landscape experience: The seven-kilometre-long coastal and recreational area includes white sandy beaches, dunes, lakes, meadows, dry grasslands and small wooded areas. In the beach park in Brøndby, near Gyvelhuse and Strandporten, there is also a beach section awarded the Blue Flag.

Brøndby Harbour is the northernmost marina in Køge Bugt Strandpark. Its facilities and location make it a suitable port of departure for trips into the forest and to the beach. The playground at the harbour is also part of this setting: It offers children a place to play while the family enjoys the view.

Nature and trails

The four Kløverstier routes in Brøndbyøster are approximately two to 14 kilometres long. They start and end at the Kløverstipælen by Brøndbyøster Station. In Brøndby, the Kløverstierne are signposted hiking and cycling routes. A considerably longer connection is the Vestegnsruten: The 42.195-kilometre route passes through Brøndby Strand, among other places, and can be completed in full or in sections on foot, by bicycle or running.

Brøndbyskoven offers nature experiences all year round and numerous opportunities to experience nature. Festpladsen has benches, tables, a fire pit, a nature playground and fitness equipment. In Esplanadeparken, walking and cycling paths complement the network of trails. Along the Vestvolden, information boards and games convey the history of the fortification.

History and culture

The present-day Brøndbyøster Church was built around 1150 from fieldstone and limestone and is one of Denmark’s oldest surviving churches. During the winter season, it hosts concerts featuring music from the Middle Ages to the present day, including soloist and choir concerts. Brøndbyvester Church is the oldest building in the municipality of Brøndbyvester; the stone church was probably built from chalk stone in the 12th century.

The Medieval Village contains reconstructed houses from 1350; there is also animal husbandry there. The site offers free public events for families and friends. Forstadsmuseet presents Brøndby’s local history in public spaces, including through pop-up exhibitions and city tours. Its permanent exhibition “Ta' på tur i tiden” can be seen at Kulturhuset Brønden.

“Bykunst i Brøndby” is also part of the cultural offering and provides free art experiences outdoors. Please note that the DIF Museum is not open every day; an appointment with the management should be arranged in advance before visiting.

Events and activities

Brøndby Kulturnat is a recurring cultural event in Brøndby and takes place on the first Friday in October. KulturCamp is a free creative winter holiday programme at Kulturhuset Brønden for children and young people from Brøndby. Store Cykeldag is held annually; on this cycling day, local attractions and businesses are visited. Brøndby Naturskole organises three public events every year.

At Dyregården Søholt, children and young people learn how to care for and look after many different animals. These include reptiles, horses, pigs, chickens, rabbits, birds and goats.
