Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality has direct access to the Øresund. Forests, historic landscapes and cultural sites characterize the municipality. Dyrehaven is the municipality’s largest natural area. Forests, lakes, open plains and hills characterize this area, whose forests are also home to Bakken, an amusement park.

Nature and Water

The Hjertestien trail runs through the forest and along the lakeshore and is rich in birdlife. The route is suitable for picnics, cycling and running, as well as for children and buggies and people with reduced mobility. Since 1992, the Blue Flag has flown every year at Taarbæk Harbour. There are also opportunities for recreational fishing along the Mølleå.

The waterways are also part of the municipality’s character. Baadfarten operates a regular scheduled service on the Lyngby–Bagsværd and Lyngby–Frederiksdal routes. Baadfarten uses historic wooden boats for this service; two of the six boats currently in operation, Prince Christian and Princess Alexandrine, date from the 19th century. Theatre performances and other events take place on the boats throughout the year.

Culture and History

The par force hunting landscape in Dyrehaven is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Another historic landscape is Mølleådalen, considered Denmark’s oldest industrial landscape. In Denmark, the Mølleå is listed as one of the 25 national industrial monuments. Mølleådalen can be explored on foot, by canoe or by boat.

Sophienholm is an exhibition hall owned by Lyngby-Taarbæk Municipality. Public guided tours are offered there, and anyone can register. The programme includes discussion salons, art history lectures, guided tours, concerts and workshops.

At the Open-Air Museum, buildings, farms and mills convey the everyday life and traditions of Denmark, Scania and the Faroe Islands over a period of more than 350 years. Horses, roosters, goats, sheep and other animals live there, and visitors can greet or pet them depending on the season and weather. The offerings also include guided tours focusing on early rural life and the beginnings of industrialization.

Getting Around the Municipality

The Jægersborg-Nærum railway stops in Brede near the northern entrance to the Open-Air Museum. Sorgenfri Park is open to the public. Templet, a music venue where Danish and international artists perform, is located in the centre of Lyngby.

Several sites recall Copenhagen’s fortification history. Fortun Fort was built between 1891 and 1893 as part of Copenhagen’s fortifications and was protected as an archaeological monument in 1992. Lyngby Fort was also built as part of Copenhagen’s fortifications, in 1887–1888. It is a concrete triangular fort and is protected as part of the cultural heritage.

Another direct destination is Virum. Other destinations at the same level are Frederikssund, Gladsaxe, Høje-Taastrup Municipality, Albertslund, Furesø Municipality, Rudersdal Municipality and Brøndby Municipality.
