Frederiksborg Castle, historical paths through Hillerød and the landscapes around Store Dyrehave give Hillerød Municipality a diverse character. Cultural history, lakes, forest paths and designated cycling routes are all set within a shared geographical framework. There are also specific destinations such as Elværket Hillerød, the bathing area at Teglgårdssøen and the organic farm Mangholm.
Culture and history
Frederiksborg Castle houses the National History Museum and Denmark’s National Portrait Gallery. A visit includes the castle church, the Knights’ Hall, the Audience Chamber, the state rooms and richly furnished rooms. The castle is surrounded by lakes and a castle park, which includes a Baroque garden, the Bath House Castle and an idyllic landscape garden.
Hillerød’s historic town can also be explored on a self-guided tour. The 1.5-kilometre route leads through the historic old town and includes 15 historical signs at selected buildings and squares near Frederiksborg Castle. The signs are available in Danish and English. Exhibitions focusing on archaeology as well as the culture and history of North Zealand are held in the turbine hall of Elværket Hillerød. There is also a family-friendly exhibition of historical artefacts and an archaeology activity where children can excavate a grave.
Forest and trails
Store Dyrehave can be explored on foot or by bicycle via its star-shaped network of paths, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Par force hunting landscape in North Zealand. The forest was a royal forest used for hunting and horse breeding. A stone wall kept red deer and horses contained there. The southern parts of Gribskov and Store Dyrehave are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage area.
Store Dyrehave has three marked exercise routes measuring 6.2 kilometres, 10 kilometres and 21.1 kilometres. The 10-kilometre route has picnic, fire and barbecue areas as well as toilets; its paths are wheelchair- and pram-friendly. The blue mountain bike trail is 23 kilometres long and can be extended by a further 9 kilometres in Tokkekøb Hegn via the southern section.
Kulsvierstien is a 3.5-kilometre footpath near Hillerød through a varied North Zealand landscape with hills and small lakes. It passes through a hilly dead-ice landscape and offers views of Alsønderup Engsø. Another marked cycling connection is Gillelejestien, also known as Route 33: the 27-kilometre cycle path leads from Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød to Gilleleje Station.
Lakes and circular routes
Esrum Sø is one of the large lakes in Hillerød Municipality. Teglgårdssøen has a bathing area with a small sandy beach and bathing jetty. There is also a footpath around the lake, as well as an access path to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Par force hunting landscape in Store Dyrehave.
The unmarked Søstien follows an approximately 2.4-kilometre circular route around Slotssøen, through the castle and castle gardens. Along the way, it offers beautiful views of Frederiksborg Castle. At Posen along Søstien there is a children’s playground inspired by Hillerød’s history; public toilets are also available there.
Getting around Hillerød
The suburban railway runs directly from central stations in Copenhagen to Hillerød Station. From there, Frederiksborg Castle can be reached on foot or by bicycle via the path along Slotssøen or via Slotsgade; the walk takes about 15 minutes. Bus routes 301 and 302 run from Hillerød Station to a stop near Frederiksborg Castle and the museum.
Near Hillerød, there is a National Park information centre at the entrance to Store Dyrehave. Hillerød Station is approximately 800 metres from the car park on Overdrevsvej for Store Dyrehave. Hillerød Municipality is one of five municipalities in Kongernes Nordsjælland National Park.
Food and regional places
The organic farm Mangholm has a café and a farm shop. There is also a restaurant open at weekends. In this way, an agriculturally oriented destination complements the historical, scenic and active attractions around Hillerød.
