Skodsborg: Beach Park, Nature Trails and Spa History
Skodsborg combines water, nature and an unusually rich spa history. Skodsborg Beach Park lies as a long, narrow park between Strandvejen and the coast and offers direct access to the water. At the same time, paths lead into Jægersborg Hegn and to further natural attractions. Those planning a trip can therefore combine different moods in a single day: time at the beach, exercise in the forest and discoveries related to the historic spa sanatorium.
Beach Park, sandy beach and bathing jetty
The beach in Skodsborg Beach Park is a narrow sandy beach measuring 300 metres in length and 25 metres in width. The park also has a small seating area with benches, a kiosk and public toilets. An accessible bathing jetty is open year-round and provides another way to access the water. Based on data from 2022 to 2025, the bathing water at Skodsborg Beach was classified as “excellent”.
These details can help with trip planning if you want to make time by the water a central part of your stay. The manageable dimensions of the sandy beach, the seating area and the bathing jetty describe different options for a day in the Beach Park, without requiring you to commit to just one way of using it. When choosing a holiday apartment in Skodsborg, it may therefore be useful to first consider how much space the beach and water should occupy in your personal travel plans.
Nature experiences between forest and marsh
An outing to Jægersborg Hegn can begin at Skodsborg Station. There are train and bus connections there, as well as a large car park nearby. SkodsborgRuten is an activity and nature experience route in Jægersborg Hegn and also passes through part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the par force hunting landscape in North Zealand. It starts and ends at Skodsborg Kurhotel and Spa in Skodsborg and runs through Jægersborg Hegn, the northern part of Jægersborg Dyrehave and Raadvad.
Nearby, Bøllemosen can be explored along a path around the marsh or via a boardwalk across it; there are several seating areas along the boardwalk. In addition, a marked yellow trail leads through Bøllemosen and forms a 4-kilometre loop through the forest. This gives you a choice when planning your day between exploring the marsh along different routes and following a clearly designated circular trail. At Skodsborg Station, KulNaturhuset also offers the opportunity to take part in herb walks, lectures, music in nature, and various exercise and sports activities.
Spa town with visible traces of history
Skodsborg was granted the status of a spa and bathing town towards the end of the 19th century. Skodsborg Bathing Sanatorium was founded in 1898; in 1925, the sanatorium was the largest spa resort in the Nordic countries. Jakob Carl Ottosen founded it together with his wife, following the American model. Those interested in this development will find several points of interest along Skodsborg Strandvej: A bust of Carl Ottosen stands in the garden in front of the spa hotel at Skodsborg Strandvej 139, while large, well-preserved villas along Strandvejen define the distinctive Strandvejen environment.
Smaller historic attractions are also part of the townscape. A memorial stone to resistance fighter Ib Mogens Gundelach stands on Skodsborg Strandvej near Skodsborgbakken. Frederik VII’s Grotto in Skodsborg was built the year after Frederik VII purchased Skodsborg Palæ and was used on ceremonial occasions. It was placed under protection in 1950. Villa Rex was added to the accommodation facilities in 1858; the monarch often stayed there for council meetings.
