Discover Nærum: Forests, Family Experiences and Culture
Nærum is a destination for families who want to combine nature, playful discoveries and unusual cultural experiences. Between the village pond, forest paths and traces of history, completely different kinds of holiday days unfold: children can discover fairytale stories outdoors, while adults explore local history, architecture or automobiles. This variety is also useful when choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, as you can select your accommodation according to whether your stay is primarily shaped by active pursuits, family excursions or cultural sightseeing.
Family experiences around the forest and village pond
A special attraction for children is Eventyrskoven, a small forest near Kikhaneengen behind Nærum Gadekær. This imaginatively designed outdoor area contains information boards with seven fairytale stories. Access is possible from Nærum Gadekær; parking is available at Nærum Church. Another entrance leads from Egebækvej via a path just behind Rundforbi Sports Centre, where parking is also possible. This makes it easy to incorporate a visit into your daily plans without treating the forest as an ordinary sightseeing attraction.
The playground in Biblioteksparken also has a clear focus on families. Children can slide, swing and play in the sand with a wooden car. If you are looking for a quieter place in between, Gadekæret has a small green recreational area north of Hartmanns Plads. Paths lead around the village pond; locals use the area for relaxing and walking their dogs.
Forest paths and a cycling route for active days
For a bike ride, you can plan to follow the 10.2 km NærumRuten. If you prefer travelling on foot, you will find a marked yellow trail through Bøllemosen in the vicinity of Nærum. The circular route around the forest is 4 km long and offers a clearly defined option for an excursion into the countryside. Nearby, Skodsborgvej also crosses Jægersborg Hegn towards Nærum. The forest paths in Jægersborg Hegn are suitable for people with limited mobility and for prams.
The forest edge separating Dyrehaven from Nærum can be experienced, among other places, from the surrounding residential villa areas. This gives Nærum a variety of landscape impressions: the small village pond, forest paths for an excursion and the distinctive boundary with Dyrehaven.
Local history and distinctive culture
Nærum presumably contains the oldest village settlement in Rudersdal Municipality. In old Nærum, around the village pond and in the nearest section of Nærum Hovedgade, reminders of the village of Nærum can still be seen. The Reading Room of the Historical Archive in Nærum offers a deeper insight. There you can use the extensive book collection of the Rudersdal Museums as well as complete collections of local newspapers: newspapers from Rudersdal Municipality go back to 1 January 2007, the collection from Søllerød Municipality to 1915 and that from Birkerød Municipality to 1952. The collections can be searched online; desired material can be ordered by email for use in the Reading Room.
At the Hartmann Monument, you can listen to the history of the monument by calling 99 400 819 (8). As a building complex, Nærum Church is characterised by the distinctive combination of the historicising Neo-Romanesque style of the 1930s with the functionalism and modernism of later periods. Another unusual collection can be found at Sommer's Automobile Museum: almost 80 cars from selected renowned brands span the early days of motoring through to the golden era of the 1950s and 1960s. They are joined by car designs created by Sommer himself, as well as a large collection of engines for cars, aircraft and ships.
The right base for your stay
A holiday apartment in Nærum suits travel plans that combine nature excursions, playground visits and cultural discoveries. If you want to keep several types of day open as options, NærumRuten, Bøllemosen, Eventyrskoven and the Historical Archive offer different points of focus. If, on the other hand, you are choosing primarily based on a particular excursion, the specific location of your accommodation may be more important than a general impression of the town. For further location options, you can also look at Skodsborg.
