Medlovice: Holiday apartment between the Chřiby Hills and Slovácko traditions
Medlovice lies at the foot of the Chřiby Hills, and the Slovácko dialect is spoken here. The village showcases its distinctive character through traditional customs, craftsmanship, historic memorials and a striking landscape.
Culture
Medlovice is home to a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, built in 1866. The village landscape also includes a monument to T. G. Masaryk, unveiled in 1930. Older women in Medlovice still wear clothing featuring elements of the Podhorácko folk costume. The memory of more recent history is also present: the bust of T. G. Masaryk and a memorial plaque commemorating those who fell in the Second World War were reinstalled after the war.
Traditions
Local traditions in Medlovice include the Slovácké hody on 16 October, the feast day of Saint Gall. Easter processions with rattles are also still held. A costumed group took part in the Slovácké hody s právem in 2025. The form of the hody tradition in Medlovice preserves an element connected with the village’s former affiliation with the Buchlov estate.
Craftsmanship
Medlovice has two ceramic workshops specializing in traditional handmade production. The Náplavovi Ceramic Workshop is considered worth visiting. It makes traditional functional ceramics such as cups, bowls, teapots, tins and jugs entirely by hand on the potter’s wheel. At the two ceramic workshops, visitors can choose ceramic products and may even be able to make a cup or vase themselves.
Landscape
The abandoned Medlovický lom porcelainite quarry is a distinctive feature. It provides a unique complete profile exposure of porcelainites and is the only site of its kind in Moravia. The exposure contains red, violet, blue-grey and brown porcelainites in a thickness of 5 metres. Medlovický lom is accessible without restriction; by car, it is possible to drive to within 250 metres.
Cycle paths
Cycle routes run through the surroundings of Medlovice, including the Velkomoravská poutní cesta pilgrimage route of the Buchlov Microregion. The Slovácko cycling excursion route “Přes rozhledny na Hradisko sv. Klimenta” also passes through Polešovice, Vážany, Medlovice, Vřesovice and Osvětimany. Medlovice lies on this route between Vážany and Vřesovice.
Sport
The multifunctional Orange sports court in Medlovice, built in 2017, is intended for tennis, nohejbal, volleyball, small-sided football and basketball.
The included services, price components, and booking and cancellation conditions are also important. This makes it possible to compare the specific offers based on their stated terms. It is also worth checking which services are included in the price and which costs are listed separately. The conditions should match your own travel plans before you make a decision. Any differing cancellation rules can also be identified at an early stage. When comparing several options, these fields should be assessed using the same criteria each time, so that included services and additional costs remain clearly separated.
