Uherské Hradiště – History, Rochus and Aquapark
Uherské Hradiště brings its past into focus on several levels. The permanent exhibition “Uherské Hradiště – město královské” presents the most important events in the city’s history, beginning with the city’s foundation in 1257.
History
The Výšina sv. Metoděje archaeological site comprises the remains of a significant ecclesiastical complex from the period of the Great Moravian Empire. At Výšina sv. Metoděje, Christian missionaries built one of the first stone churches north of the Danube around the turn of the 8th and 9th centuries. The freely accessible archaeological site features a reconstructed ground plan of the ecclesiastical buildings as well as an information panel about the history and significance of the site. The Expozice dějin města complements this historical perspective with a virtual tour of historic Uherské Hradiště, showing what the city looked like in 1670.
The Expozice Věznice Uherské Hradiště is located in the attic of the Reduta, not in the prison building; it is not accessible to people with disabilities. Photographs and Czech-language text panels present stories from the history of the prison during the National Socialist and communist totalitarian regimes.
Culture
The Rochus Open-Air Museum, a museum of folk architecture, is located in the Uherské Hradiště-Mařatice district. It includes an original wooden barn relocated from Břestek and several farmsteads. The open-air museum presents the ethnography of the Dolňácko region around Uherské Hradiště through traditional architecture, forms of housing, ways of working and living, clothing, customs and forms of folklore expression.
Throughout the year, recurring customs and seasonal events take place at the Rochus Open-Air Museum, including Fašank, Easter, the raising of the maypole, the opening of the pastures, the harvest, the pilgrimage and carol singing on St Stephen’s Day. The Joži Uprka Gallery displays representative works from the collections of Nadace Moravské Slovácko, Národní galerie v Praze, Moravská galerie v Brně, Galerie výtvarného umění v Olomouci, Krajská galerie ve Zlíně and Římskokatolická farnost ve Strážnici. On the last Saturday of each month, visitors can take part in a guided tour of the exhibition accompanied by a curator.
The destinations focus on different themes: the historical exhibition, the archaeological site and the prison exhibition explore different chapters of the past in greater depth. At Rochus, buildings, customs and regional ethnography come together; the gallery, park and aquapark broaden the range to include art, nature and recreation.
Nature
Rochus Park has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2005. More than 100 bird species and 50 butterfly species live in the area. Uherské Hradiště Aquapark offers swimming and leisure pools, saunas and relaxation areas.
