Holiday apartment in Hluk: Fortress, nature and culture

Hluk combines a medieval fortress, a distinctive stream valley and unique insights into regional culture. Hluk Fortress stands in the town centre on the right bank of the Okluky stream. Its first written mention dates back to 1391. After extensive reconstruction, it reopened on 1 June 2024. The Information Centre in Hluk offers tours of the fortress, complementing the historic site with a practical opportunity to get to know the building.

Landscape and nature

Hluk lies in the valley of the Okluky stream. The town is surrounded on all sides by the hills of the uplands and the last foothills of the White Carpathians. The Okluky Nature Reserve is part of the surrounding natural area. It protects the only surface exposure of Púchov marls within the Magura Flysch. The nature reserve lies approximately 1.5 km from the centre of Hluk. Thus, the watercourse, the surrounding elevations and a geologically distinctive protected area stand side by side in the townscape, without the individual landscape features losing their own significance.

Culture

Another cultural attraction is the folk houses of Rajčovňa. They showcase rural living from the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. The folk houses also host exhibitions and events. Visits are possible throughout the year. In this way, the cultural offering extends from the medieval fortress in the town centre to insights into the living conditions of past centuries. Every three years, Hluk hosts the Dolňácké Festival Days with the Ride of the Kings. This recurring festival complements the permanently accessible folk houses with a regular event rooted in local tradition.

Leisure

The Hluk municipal outdoor swimming pool has a swimming pool and a children's paddling pool. The complex also includes a play area designed for children. A beach volleyball court is located next to the outdoor pool. The swimming pool, paddling pool, play area and beach volleyball court are clearly defined components of the local leisure offering. The different areas stand alongside one another and give the outdoor pool several distinct uses, without requiring any additional assumptions about its facilities.

Cycling

A long-distance cycle route also passes through the town: section no. 5048 of the Karpatská magistrála long-distance cycle route connects Hluk with Ostrožská Lhota. The connection is designated as an independent section of the long-distance cycle route, establishing a clear link between Hluk and neighbouring Ostrožská Lhota.

Local tradition

The local customs also include making plum butter. This preparation was once common and is now only a tradition. In combination with the folk houses of Rajčovňa, it becomes clear that historical ways of life and contemporary cultural events take different forms in Hluk: the former everyday practice of making plum butter exists alongside year-round visits, exhibitions, events and the Dolňácké Festival Days held every three years.
