Holiday apartment in Komňa: Culture, Nature and Traditions

Komňa leads to exhibitions on local history and an extinct craft, the historic traces of Zuvačov, paths through floodplain meadows and small flooded quarries. There are also festivals whose forms are closely connected with local traditions.

Culture and History

The memorial to J. A. Comenius was opened in 1992 in a listed granary. The exhibition there is accessible on request; calling at least one day in advance is recommended. The Obydlí zvěrokleštiče houses a listed building dating from 1850. The exhibition presents the once widespread and now extinct craft of zvěrokleštičství, the castration of animals. The Church of St. James the Elder in Komňa is an Empire-style building dating from 1842–1846. Another historical trace leads to Zuvačov Castle: it was a Gothic castle and was already described as abandoned in 1517. Its remains lie about 1.5 km east of Komňa on an isolated hill. A footpath with simple steps made from wooden logs has been created to provide access.

Paths and Nature

The Koménka educational trail starts at Nový Světlov Chateau and ends in Komňa. It is easy and has only slight changes in elevation. Its route follows the Koménka stream through the beautiful surroundings of the floodplain meadows. The path to the pilgrimage site in Myší húšť is lined with six stations featuring quotations by Jan Amos Comenius. The pilgrimage site itself serves as a place for relaxation and reflection.

The Rasová Quarry Natural Monument lies 2.5 km southeast of Komňa. It is a disused sandstone quarry partially filled with water, home to endangered plant and animal species. Modrá voda is another small flooded quarry near Komňa. It can be reached either directly from Komňa or from Motorest Rasová via a green-marked trail.

Traditions

In July, the Komenské hody festival takes place in Komňa around St. James’s Day on the 25th. It is held on the nearest weekend or on a weekend determined by the priest. On Saturday, the Komňané brass band and the Podšable folklore ensemble jointly hold a costumed church-fair procession with a "právo".

Another traditional celebration is Fašank, which is observed in Komňa in February or March. Today, Fašank always takes place on the preceding Saturday and is characterized by a sword dance that has survived in only three municipalities of Moravian Slovakia.
