Kunovice combines an unusually vivid aviation history with living traditions, listed historical landmarks and nature-oriented leisure opportunities. Between the Letecké muzeum v Kunovicích, Jízda králů and the Kunovský les educational trail, the town offers diverse facets that come together to create a varied visit.

Culture

The Letecké muzeum v Kunovicích displays the former government aircraft Tupolev TU-154M “Naganský expres”. At the same time, it documents the history of aviation and aircraft production, which continues to play an important role in the Czech Republic and is concentrated in Kunovice in the Uherské Hradiště area. As part of admission, visitors can look inside aircraft and listen to the crews’ radio communication with the control tower at Kunovice Airport.

Jízda králů is also firmly rooted in Kunovice’s history and present. The oldest known record dates from 1892. Since its revival in 1996, Jízda králů has taken place regularly every two years, usually around Whit Sunday and approximately one week before Jízda králů in Vlčnov.

History and traditions

Svatováclavské hody s právem has been celebrated in Kunovice since 1918. A central feature of Kunovice’s Hody is the hodové právo: it derives from the symbols of authority of municipal self-government and symbolizes rank, power and authority. The Jízda králů festival and its accompanying events take place in the centre of Kunovice and its immediate surroundings. The folk dance school takes place regularly in August and September as part of Kunovice’s Hody.

Historical landmarks include listed house No. 679. It was built in the first third of the 19th century after two devastating fires in Kunovice and preserves a traditional black kitchen. The present form of the Church of St Peter and Paul dates from the 18th century; the church is open during services.

Active recreation

The Jízdy králů Kunovice complex is used year-round by locals and tourists for active recreation. It has a sports field with artificial turf, a skate arena and an outdoor fitness area. Sports equipment can be borrowed there free of charge.

Nature

In the vicinity of Kunovice, the 5 km-long Kunovský les educational trail runs through a recreational forest close to the town, mostly across flat terrain. Ten stations introduce typical plants and animals of the floodplain forest community in the Morava River floodplain. The trail begins at a clearing known as Jelení louka near the cycle path to the Kunovice aircraft factory and Kunovice Airport.

In the vicinity of Kunovice, Lesopark Kunovský les also offers a public running track, an educational trail, a disc golf course and a children’s playground for leisure activities. In addition to cultural attractions, clearly designated paths and facilities are therefore available in the immediate surroundings of the town.
