Settlement traces from the Paleolithic have also been found in the Kudlovická dolina. In the northern part of the valley lies the Budačina rock formation, which is associated with legends about the stay of robbers.

This means that very different temporal and natural references coexist in the same landscape: the wet habitats along the Kudlovický stream, the geological Budačina formation and traces of human settlement from prehistoric times. The Kudlovická dolina remains clearly defined as a named landscape area between Kostelany and Kudlovice.

Cultural History

The Chapel of St John the Baptist has been listed as a protected cultural monument in the state heritage register since 1958. It is a chapel made of hewn stone dating from 1747, with a slightly larger-than-life sculptural group depicting the Baptism of Christ. The Plague Chapel has been recognized as a protected cultural monument since 1999. It was built after 1663 as a thanksgiving for the averting of the plague.

The Bell Tower is also one of the protected cultural monuments and dates from the second half of the 18th century. The Strmenský House illustrates the residential and economic way of life of a small farmer in the region at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Thus, in Kudlovice, sacred buildings, a bell tower and a building illustrating the everyday life of an earlier small-farming way of life can be found side by side.

Wine and Local Traditions

The vineyards in Kudlovice were first mentioned in 1466. In the Paňháje vineyard area, a total of 31 hectares were planted with grapevines in 1657. The history of winegrowing also includes the Kudlovický vinný žleb wine event: It takes place every year around the turn of May and June in the Kudlovský žleb wine lane on Hubáčkova Street. During the event, the wine cellars are open to the public and winegrowers offer tastings.

The traditional customs handed down through the generations include children's Easter ratchet procession. In Kudlovice, this custom is known as “vrgání”.
