Holiday apartment in Modrá: Great Moravia, Water and the Chřiby Hills

Modrá combines culture, nature and regional traditions in a sequence of specific sites. Here, between history, water, paths and crafts, it is not only the themes that change, but also the forms in which they become visible.

Culture

The Archaeological Open-Air Museum in Modrá focuses on a fortified settlement from the period of Great Moravia. The site was created on the basis of actual archaeological finds, some of which were made directly at the location of the open-air museum. From the palace of the Archaeological Open-Air Museum in Modrá, you can enter the Klenotnice Velké Moravy exhibition room. Another historical monument is the early medieval Church of St. John in Modrá, which is now a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic. At the Archaeological Open-Air Museum in Modrá, you can also try out traditional crafts. Dogs are allowed at the Archaeological Open-Air Museum in Modrá, but they must be kept on a leash.

Nature

Živá voda is a botanical and limnological exhibition about life in and around the water, as well as about aquatic animals and plants of the Morava River, the adjacent streams and the ponds. The Živá voda complex also includes an artificially created natural swimming biotope, whose water is naturally filtered with the help of special plants. At the Živá voda Modrá exhibition, you can observe carp, pike and beluga sturgeon in a pond through a glass tunnel.

The Stezka praturů is also part of the site: it can be reached from Živá voda via a footbridge that runs up to four metres above the ground. The Stezka praturů has twelve themed stations. There, you can observe aurochs and learn interesting facts about their history and their return to the Moravian pastures after 2,000 years.

Paths

The 5 km-long Fauna and Flora of the Chřiby Hills educational trail runs through Modrá and is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. Its route extends from the Convent Pond near the pilgrimage basilica in Velehrad through Modrá and the valley of the Modranský potok into the Chřiby Hills. In the valley of the Modranský potok there is a cascade of six ponds with numerous rare and protected animals, especially amphibians.

Above the northern edge of Modrá stands the small wooden Židoviny observation tower.

Traditions

Events take place in the Archaeological Open-Air Museum in Modrá and in the municipality of Modrá in every season; over many years, they have developed into traditions. At the Centrum historie a tradic Modrá, you can taste regional fruit brandies and wine, as well as learn about the fruit-distilling process and the history of viticulture.
