Holiday apartment in Borsice – Archaeology, Wine and Trails

Borsice is a place where very different traces and forms of local culture come together. At the Chrástka site, a camp of mammoth hunters dating from around 30,000 BC was discovered. Tusks and bones from several mammoths, bones of other animals, and several thousand stone artefacts were unearthed there. These finds give the place a clear archaeological connection, which is combined with more recent evidence of the church, crafts, winegrowing and regional customs.

History

The Church of St. Wenceslas in Borsice has been dedicated at least since the 16th century to Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech lands. In 1791, it was extensively rebuilt. Its furnishings include three altars; the main altar features a painting of Saint Wenceslas by Ignác Raab. The church thus preserves several clearly identifiable traces of its religious and architectural history.

The historic Sovín water mill, also known as Horní, is another concrete testimony to the local past. It still retains its original milling equipment. The name at the same time refers to the traditional designation of the building, while the preserved equipment makes the mill's technical character visible.

Nature

A separate route into the past is provided by the educational trail „In the Footsteps of Mammoth Hunters“. It is approximately 1 kilometre long and combines its route with information panels, life-size wooden sculptures of animals and mammoth hunters, animal tracks, a shamanic post and covered seating areas. The educational trail is intended for hikers, families with children, seniors, residents and visitors to the municipality of Borsice, as well as school trips. Its individual elements turn the subject of mammoth hunters into a series of vivid stations along a short route.

Trails

Another connection between regional history and modern travel is provided by the cycle path „St. Methodius Cycle Path“. Via Zlechov, it connects Borsice with the wider cycle routes in the Uherské Hradiště area. The section in the Borsice cadastral area is 1,640 metres long and begins at the last houses near Dolní mlýn. The cycle path follows an old road that Saint Methodius may have regularly travelled along in the 9th century.

Traditions

The Slovácké hody s právem festival is part of the local annual calendar. It takes place in Borsice every year on the third Sunday in October. As part of the celebration, a procession of the costumed Chasa moves through the municipality of Borsice on Sunday. In this way, regional customs appear not only as a date on the calendar but also as a visible procession through the village.

On Easter Sunday, Borsice also hosts a wine presentation featuring approximately 1,000 wine samples. After paying a one-time admission fee, visitors can taste wines of their choice using a glass decorated with the event logo. The format of the event combines a large number of samples with clearly organised on-site tasting.
