Activities

The yellow-marked hiking trail from Osvětimany reaches Sv. Kliment after 5 km and Cimburk after 7.5 km. Another 7 km hiking route from Osvětimany leads via Hora sv. Kliment and Kazatelna to the ruins of Cimburk Castle. The two routes therefore differ in both their course and distance.

There is also a designated cycling route connected with Osvětimany. The Podchřibská cycling route no. 8 is an easy 36.5 km circular route for road and trekking bikes that starts and ends in Osvětimany. In winter, Ski Park Osvětimany supplements the range of activities: it rents out ski and snowboard equipment and offers skiing and snowboarding lessons for complete beginners, children and advanced skiers. For skiing and snowboarding, it has a 400 m long slope with a vertical drop of 98 m.

Culture

Above Osvětimany stands the Baroque Church of St. Gall, a historic landmark more than 300 years old. The church houses a twelve-register organ built by organ maker Karel Neusser in 1889. Thus, the church is associated not only with its Baroque appearance and age, but also with a precisely identified instrument with its own history of craftsmanship.

The traditional havelské hody s právem festival takes place in Osvětimany every year in the first half of October. During the Hody, the Nedakoňanka brass band accompanied the procession and the evening dance event. The town’s traditional culture also includes the historic Osvětimany folk costume: it was classified as belonging to the podhorácký costume group and has not survived to the present day.

In the vicinity of Osvětimany lies Hradisko sv. Klimenta, a Great Moravian historical site associated with Cyril and Methodius. Hradisko sv. Klimenta is freely accessible year-round. Its historical classification and connection with the two figures therefore stand alongside the local festivals and church architecture as distinct cultural references.

Nature

The Chřiby Mountains around Osvětimany consist of resistant sandstone and feature numerous hilltops, rock formations and ridges. The Osvětimanské skály, which consist of several rock blocks and are known by locals as Čertovky, are part of this landscape. A well-trodden footpath through mature trees leads to the Osvětimanské skály. From the flat summit of Zikmundova skála, there are views across a large part of the Chřiby Mountains.

The Osvětimany Reservoir is also located near Osvětimany, in the valley of the Klimentský potok stream. The water surface covers 10.5 ha and is suitable for swimming, leisurely canoeing and fishing. Thus, in addition to paths through the Chřiby Mountains and rock formations, the area around the town also offers bodies of water with clearly defined recreational uses.
