Culture and history

Hoštice reveals its cultural and historical character through various forms of architecture and furnishings. The Baroque Church of St. Giles in Hoštice was built according to a design by Jakub Pánek. Its wall paintings are attributed to Sebastini, also known as František Antonín Šebesta. The wayside shrine Boží muka is part of the Baroque vernacular architecture. It is a High Baroque wayside shrine with a rectangular ground plan, niches with conches in the lower section, shallow niches with depictions of saints in the upper section, and a pyramidal roof with a two-winged iron cross. The lower niches with conches and the shallow niches with depictions of saints arranged above them are positioned one above the other. The pyramidal roof with the two-winged iron cross completes the structure above.

Castle park and garden

Hoštice Castle already had a fortress as its predecessor in the 12th century and was later converted into a small château. A historic formal ornamental garden is documented at the castle; it extended across two terraces. Horse chestnut trees planted in a regular grid have survived on the lower terrace of the ornamental garden by the castle. In the castle park there is a bust of the writer Marie Ebner-Eschenbach, made of white marble and set on a stone pedestal. Hoštice Castle is not currently open to the public; the park can be viewed through the castle’s iron gate.

Avenues and walks

The walk “Kaštanová vycházka” follows the yellow-marked hiking route from the chestnut avenue to the forest. From Hoštice Castle, the same walk leads through a second chestnut avenue to the forest. The chestnut avenue along the walk, supplemented by ash and walnut trees, consists of a total of 332 trees and is part of the protected avenues of commemorative trees. The circuit “Lesem Hříběcích hor z Hoštic ke kapličce Na Strašné” leads from Hoštice via an old castle avenue to the Na Strašné forest chapel. In addition, the old, extensive chestnut avenue between Litenčice and Zdislavice leads to Hoštice.
