Holiday apartment in Chvalčov: Nature Trails and Hostýn History
Chvalčov combines designated nature trails with natural monuments and historic sites in its surroundings. Clear information about the landscape and history meets tangible traces from prehistoric times, the Celtic past and religious culture.
Trails and Nature
The Chodník Masarykových has eight information boards covering history, sights, fauna and flora. The Příroda Hostýnských vrchů nature trail has eight stations and ends at the Chvalčov – lesní školka trail junction. The Hostýnské vrchy nature trail differs from it in its length of 18 km. After the Chvalčov – lesní školka trail junction, this nature trail leads through the Na Jančích natural monument; along this section, it also passes through the Smrdutá natural monument.
The trails therefore present different types of content side by side: the information boards focus explicitly on history, sights, fauna and flora, while the Příroda Hostýnských vrchů nature trail structures its themes across eight stations. The Hostýnské vrchy nature trail has its own route, defined by its length and the two natural monuments. The Chvalčov – lesní školka trail junction is the designated endpoint of one trail and an important reference point for the further route of the other nature trail.
History
Chvalčov itself also contains a tangible historical trace: a commemorative plaque has been located at house no. 401 in Chvalčov since 1923. The prehistoric Hostýn-Hraddiste and the Celtic oppidum of Hostýn were also located in the area around Chvalčov. Both occupied a strategic position as centres of long-distance trade on the Amber Road. At the Hostýn site, visitors can see a four-metre-high rampart and the ditch running in front of it.
The historic sites are therefore characterised not only by their chronological classification but also by their former function. Hostýn-Hraddiste and the Hostýn oppidum were connected with long-distance trade and a strategic location, while visitors at the Hostýn site can see a four-metre-high rampart and the ditch running in front of it. This historical picture is complemented by the commemorative plaque at house no. 401 in Chvalčov, which has been affixed there since 1923.
Culture

Several clearly defined cultural points of reference therefore come together at Hostýn: the pilgrimage site of Svatý Hostýn, the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Svatohostýnské Museum. With its completion in 1748, the basilica points to a specific historical period, while the museum presents the development of Hostýn from prehistoric times to the present day. The Marian pilgrimage site itself has attracted pilgrims for three centuries.
