Ústrašín: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Ústrašín is especially tangible where local history and landscape meet: on a wooded hill southeast of the village, the castle site preserves traces in the terrain of a watchtower castle dating from the mid-14th century.

History and churches

Ústrašín Castle had fallen into ruin by no later than before the middle of the 15th century. Heřman of Ústrašín is considered its earliest known owner; on 27 October 1354, he is documented as the patron of the local church. The settlement's street-like layout is also associated with colonization villages of the 13th century.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary retains its original location, floor plan, and a large part of its medieval masonry. The church contains a cast of a historic bronze door knocker in the shape of a lion's head; the original is kept in the National Museum in Prague. The church grounds also include the mortuary chapel regarded as a former late Gothic chapel.

Landscape and surroundings

The castle site lies on a northwestern slope of the Na Stráni hill above the right bank of the Hejlovka and above the Hejlovka valley. Its approximately circular layout comprises an outer rampart, a ditch, and a central mound about 50 metres wide and approximately 50 metres in diameter.

Orlov, which is classified as a mountain, lies in the immediate surroundings. The area around Ústrašín also includes Troják, Putimovský vrch, and Bělský Kopec, which are likewise classified as mountains, as well as Svatá Anna, a named attraction in the form of a church. In the wider regional area are Janštejn as a ruin, the named cultural monument Želivský Kláštor in the form of a monastery, and “Roštejn [Doupě] castle outlook t.” as a named attraction in the form of a castle.

Paths and routes

In the vicinity of Ústrašín, the Novocerekvický okruh crosses the Proseč Obořiště–Ústrašín road and then continues along a blue-marked hiking trail towards Pelhřimov. The circular route offers views of the Hejlovka valley. On a map, “Cyklotrasa č. 7” is shown between Kamenice nad Lipou and Nová Cerekev; Ústrašín is also marked there.
