Želkovice: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Roman Catholic branch church of St. Peter and Paul in Želkovice stands on a hill above the western edge of the village. The church and the cemetery wall surrounding it are regularly maintained. The surrounding area is home to extensive orchards, predominantly apple orchards, which in spring offer views of the surrounding landscape through the white or pink blossoms of the fruit trees.

Culture and History

The rotunda of the Church of St. Peter and Paul has a slightly oval ground plan and opens to the east into a rectangular-ended chancel, which originally had a horseshoe-shaped apse. A Neo-Romanesque nave was added to the rotunda from 1852 to 1853 according to plans by the engineer Wetzl.

A sculpture of a Turk's head is set into the masonry of the rotunda. It commemorates the Russo-Austrian war against the Turks. The boundary wall of the church grounds has a wrought-iron double-leaf gate.

At the northern upper end of Želkovice's elongated village green stands a statue of Saint Joseph. The statue and its pedestal are made of sandstone. It is a high-quality late Baroque work by an as-yet unknown artist; a dedication inscription gives the year 1762.

Landscape

In the vicinity of Želkovice, a wide path leads from the Church of St. Peter and Paul southeastwards to Lounek. The slopes and summit offer views of the surrounding agricultural landscape. The summit of Lounek is largely fenced off, but can be reached from the east.

In the vicinity of Želkovice, spring pheasants' eyes, pasqueflowers and other rare plants grow on the steppe grassland of Lounek's summit.

Traditions

The municipality of Želkovice has announced the traditional event Stavění Máje for the morning of Saturday, 2 May 2026. At Stavění Máje, men can take part in erecting the maypole, while women and girls can take part in decorating it.
