Tvarožná: Holiday apartments and holiday homes
Tvarožná tells its story through specific places: churches, monuments, works of art and the landscape provide the village with diverse points of connection for exploration.
Culture
The Neo-Gothic parish church of St Nicholas was built in 1880–1881 on the site of an earlier church dating from the first half of the 14th century. It is a cultural monument and one of Tvarožná’s distinctive architectural landmarks. The pilgrimage chapel of Our Lady of the Snows was built in 1832 on the foundations of a wooden chapel dating from 1700.
In the central area of the village square stand the Tvaroženské Venuses, three bronze sculptures of stylised women by Vladimír Drápal on concrete plinths. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk also stands by the stream on the village square; it is the work of an unknown artist and is listed as a monument. Below the church, the Václav Kosmák monument was erected in 1923 by grateful members of the local community.
Other traces of the village’s history include Kosmákův kříž, a polychrome wooden Art Nouveau cross by Matouš Plotěný. In 1893, local community members erected it to commemorate the departure of Tvarožná’s parish priest and writer Václav Kosmák. The building of the former windmill dates from the third quarter of the 19th century and is locally known as Bahnerův mlýn, the Bahner Mill.
History and remembrance
The diorama of the Battle of Slavkov was donated to Tvarožná in 1990 by the Viennese group Deutschmeister Schützenkorps and created by Alfred Frühwirth. It is located on the first floor of the Tvarožná municipal office. The Jeannette replica is a copy of a French Gribeauval-type eight-pounder cannon that was used in the Battle of Slavkov.
The Gallery of Commanders consists of portraits on the north wall of the chapel on Santon; they depict commanders who led troops in the area around Santon during the Battle of Slavkov. By 2007 at the latest, Santon in Tvarožná had been the venue for a main programme item of the commemorative events for the Battle of Slavkov for more than 25 years: a re-enactment of the battle.
The Soffer Monument also commemorates a specific event: the concrete monument in the Functionalist style stands at the site where the 30-year-old racing driver Bedřich Soffer died during a test drive on 15 September 1928.
Nature and landscape
Santon is a rocky steppe on Kulm conglomerates with specially protected plant species; the area covers 0.39 hectares. The site of the remains of the field fortifications forms part of the Santon natural monument. On Santon are the remains of trenches dug by French soldiers in 1805 while fortifying Santon.
Below Tvarožná, at the confluence of the Tvaroženský potok and the Roketnice, lies a wetland that provides a habitat for numerous waterfowl.
Paths
The educational trail dedicated to the Battle of the Three Emperors was established in 2003 by the non-profit organisation Mohyla míru-Austerlitz. It leads to viewpoints commemorating important locations on the former battlefield. Cycle routes run through Tvarožná, with routes across the battlefield of the Battle of the Three Emperors and through the Brno wine region.
