Mikulov: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Mikulov combines distinctive buildings, Jewish history and protected landscapes. One of the special cultural monuments is the Mikulov Synagogue: it is the only surviving synagogue in Moravia of the so-called Polish type and essentially dates from the middle of the 16th century.

Culture and History

Mikulov Castle stands on a distinctive rocky promontory and has been a highly visible landmark of the town for several centuries. Today, it is home to the Regional Museum in Mikulov and houses several interesting exhibitions. It also has a library with around 11,000 volumes.

The historic Jewish quarter also preserves numerous testimonies to its past: 45 of the buildings that have survived to this day have been protected as immovable cultural monuments. In the Jewish cemetery, the Rabbinical Hill is considered the most valuable and, at the same time, the most visited section; it contains the gravestones of rabbis from Mikulov and the Moravian regional rabbis.

Other distinctive testimonies to the town's history include Kozí hrádek, a two-storey late Gothic artillery tower built on Kozí vrch in the 15th century, as well as the Mikulov MJ-S 29 “SVAH” fortress. It has a visitor exhibition featuring weapons and other equipment and armament components of the Czechoslovak People's Army.

Nature and Trails

Svatý kopeček is designated as a nature reserve because of the abundance of protected and rare plant and animal species. A species-rich rocky steppe grows on its southern slopes. The eponymous educational trail in Mikulov consists of a total of 11 information panels and includes a viewpoint above the quarry.

Another educational trail, “In the Footsteps of the Anabaptists”, is 1.5 km long, runs through the town's streets, is easily accessible and not demanding. Five panels provide information about the short but fruitful period during which Anabaptists settled in Mikulov from 1526 onwards. The introductory panel stands in the town centre next to the Dietrichstein burial chapel.

The “Mikulov – Around Mikulov, Svatý kopeček (Holy Hill)” cycle route is around 4.8 km long and has a difficulty rating of 1. Another distinctive natural area is the Na Turold Cave. It lies in the nature reserve of the 385 m-high Turold; Turold is located on the northern outskirts of Mikulov.

Town Views and Wine

The tower of St. Wenceslas Church in Mikulov can be climbed via 135 steps and offers a panoramic view of the whole of Mikulov. In the town, visitors can also take part in experiential wine tastings at renowned wineries, wine cellars and vinotheques.
