Wettern (Větřní) offers everything from church architecture and industrial history to cycling paths, an outdoor swimming pool, a sauna and a weir on the Vltava.

Church architecture and history

The Church of Saint John of Nepomuk in Větřní (Kostel svatého Jana Nepomuckého ve Větřní) was built between 1936 and 1938. Its basilica floor plan consists of a central nave and two side aisles; the tower transitions from a square to an octagonal shape. The Chapel at the Church of Saint John of Nepomuk in Větřní (Kaple u kostela svatého Jana Nepomuckého ve Větřní) was reconstructed in 2008.

In the cadastral area of the town of Větřní, the Church of Saint John the Baptist in Zátoň (Kostel svatého Jana Křtitele v Zátoni) stands on a prominent hill above the Vltava. It was built after 1490 on older foundations and is a broad single-nave church with a pentagonal presbytery.

Another historic building is the late-Renaissance fortress Pozdně renesanční jednopatrová tvrz Větřní. It was first mentioned in 1347, rebuilt in the late Renaissance and converted into a school in 1892.

Industry on the Vltava

The industrial history is associated with Ignác Spiro. In 1867, he bought the Pečkovský mlýn grain mill on the road from Český Krumlov to Rožmberk and established a wood-grinding mill there. He subsequently began gradually relocating production from the paper mill in Český Krumlov to the site. The Papírny Větřní (JIP) were among the largest paper mills in the Czech Republic.

Swimming and paths

Venkovní koupaliště Větřní is an outdoor swimming pool with a slide and facilities for refreshments. A hydraulic device enables people with disabilities to enter the water. The sauna at the Bazén a sauna Větřní centre has two cabins and a cooling pool.

For cyclists, a cycling circuit leads after the railway crossing to the paper mill on the outskirts of Větřní, crosses a bridge to the right bank of the Vltava and follows a flat cycle path along the river to Český Krumlov. The regional Českokrumlovsko cycling circuit also passes through Větřní. On the Vltava, the Branná–Nové Spolí section passes the Jez Větřní – Pečkovský mlýn weir at river kilometre 30.1.
