Höritz: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Höritz combines a revived Passion Play tradition with a diverse townscape. The Hořice Passion Plays were revived in 1992 and added to the national list of the intangible cultural heritage of the traditional folk culture of the Czech Republic on 18 February 2025.

Culture

The Municipal Museum and the Hořice Passion Plays Museum presents the history of the Passion Plays as well as the history and present of Hořice na Šumavě. It also features a model of the Passion Play theatre, which was built in 1893 for 1,500 spectators. The Museum of Historical Radios is also located in the cultural centre in the centre of Hořice na Šumavě.

Another local tradition is the Hořický Masopust, which was first held in 1993. It is based on the meeting of a Růžičková procession and a straw procession. Both negotiate who has the right to roam and sing in the area concerned. The Hořice Cultural Year holds all events in the covered amphitheatre in Hořice na Šumavě 202.

Townscape

The market square of Hořice na Šumavě is a heritage conservation zone. It is home to the oldest surviving medieval pillory in Bohemia, dating from 1549. The Church of St Catherine, a 13th-century church with stained-glass windows, is also a defining feature. It is accessible year-round and can be reached from the centre of Hořice na Šumavě in just a few minutes. The church defines the characteristic panorama of Hořice na Šumavě and is visible from the municipality and the surrounding hills from a distance.

Nature

The Pohádková rezervace is located on a picturesque wooded hill above Hořice na Šumavě. In this setting, the administrator looks after all endangered species of Czech fairy-tale creatures, thereby protecting Czech cultural heritage.
