Culture and History

The former early Gothic Church of St. Markéta, now the Church of the Heart of Jesus, was rebuilt in 1593, redesigned in the Baroque style at the end of the 17th century, and altered again in the second half of the 19th century. The church and its surrounding wall are listed as cultural monuments. The church sacristy clearly dates from the second half of the 13th century; the first written reference to the former Church of St. Markéta dates from 1339.

The pilgrimage chapel of Panny Marie Pomocné was built on Turmberg in 1856; it stands 450 m south of the church. Thumberg Chapel is a distinctive landmark of Malsching and a cultural monument. Grille doors allow visitors to look inside the small church building.

At the site of the former watchtower castle near the chapel, there are two benches with views to the south and a covered rest shelter with a rubbish bin.

Landscape and Historical Traces

About half of the cadastral area of Malsching is forested, while a large part of the area is used agriculturally as meadows and pastures. Remains of a rampart that surrounded the former tower or castle complex can be seen in the terrain around Turmberg.

From Tumberg, there is an extensive view to the south over a hilly, forested landscape with meadows.

Cycling Routes

The Krumlovská cycle path runs through Malsching. The Velotrail 1–Frymbursko runs through Malsching. Malsching is also located on the 42.3 km-long Vyšší Brod–Malsching–Frymburk–Hořice na Šumavě cycling route.
