Kaplitz: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Kaplitz combines a listed historic town centre with historic churches, brewing history, marked trails and a range of water-based activities. In the historic centre of Kaplice lies a municipal heritage zone that includes the main square with a Renaissance town hall. House No. 215 on the square features figurative sgraffito.

Culture and History

One of the prominent details in the town centre is the stone fountain complex in Kaplice, which was built in 1646. Renovations from 1717, 1775, 1901, 1934 and 1996 are recorded on its central stone column. The Church of St Peter and Paul is also a defining feature: the Gothic two-nave church has a tower on the northern side of its west façade; the tower and nave date from the 13th century. It is regarded as an important example of South Bohemian Late Gothic.

The Late Gothic Church of St Florian stands immediately next to St Peter and Paul. During the Napoleonic Wars, it served as a storehouse for military supplies and was badly damaged. The former hospital is located by the Chapel of St Barbara and St Joseph; it is a Baroque listed building with unusually thick walls. The hospital served the poorest patients and travellers.

The history of brewing is also part of the town’s historic character. The Bělidlo Brewery was built in 1648 outside the town of Kaplice on the Malše River. The Buquoy Brewery was destroyed by fire in 1718 and rebuilt on a larger scale in 1732. The Krampus Gallery is located in reconstructed cellars of a former Rožmberk brewery in Kaplice. It displays masks carved from wood or leather, as well as original Krampus clothing and equipment. The gallery also features photographs of Krampus shows in Kaplice and a compilation film of earlier Krampus processions.

Nature and Trails

The educational trail is situated in the landscape of the foothills of the Novohrad Mountains. It includes simple observation tasks for children and has information panels with supplementary QR codes.

The blue-marked route From Kaplice to Pořešín begins in Kaplice’s town park and leads through a wild river canyon landscape. The rocky sections along the route are secured with chains. Another marked route, Crossing the Slepičí Mountains, can be started at the Kaplice Information Centre. It is 18 kilometres long and has a walking time of approximately six hours. The route is marked, moderately challenging and runs along paved forest, field and asphalt paths.

Water and Leisure

The Koupaliště Kaplice outdoor swimming pool has a pool for small children, a larger teaching pool with a slide and a 200-metre-long large pool for adults. The Nádrž Květoňov reservoir near Kaplice contains a seven-hectare area of still water for fly fishing. Fly fishing, spinning for pike and fishing from a boat are permitted there.
