The Church of St. John the Baptist in Zátoň is a late Gothic building situated on a prominent hill above the Vltava.

Culture and History

The church was built on older foundations after 1490 and vaulted in 1510. However, the history of Zátoň goes back further: the settlement formed the southern extension of the Benedictine Monastery of Ostrov’s holdings and is documented in a charter from 1310. The early history of Zátoň is also associated with a wooded area and a chapel of St. John the Baptist, which, according to tradition, were donated to Ostrov Monastery between 1037 and 1055.

The archaeological area of Zátoň lies on the Vltava and encompasses an area with confirmed archaeological finds or with well-founded expectations of archaeological finds.

Water

About 1 km after the bridge in Zátoň, the Vltava widens and forms numerous shallows. An island follows, which is passed on the left; further downstream lies the Na Pískárně campsite.
